Sleep Athkar (Before Bed)

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ ۚ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ

Transliteration

Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa l-ḥayyu l-qayyūm, lā ta'khudhuhū sinatun wa lā nawm, lahū mā fī s-samāwāti wa mā fī l-arḍ, man dhā lladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahū illā bi-idhnih, yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum, wa lā yuḥīṭūna bi-shay'in min ʿilmihī illā bi-mā shā', wasiʿa kursiyyuhū s-samāwāti wa l-arḍ, wa lā ya'ūduhū ḥifẓuhumā, wa huwa l-ʿaliyyu l-ʿaẓīm.

Translation

Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِن رَّبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۚ كُلٌّ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّن رُّسُلِهِ ۚ وَقَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ. لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِن نَّسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ أَنتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ.

Transliteration

Āmana r-rasūlu bimā unzila ilayhi min rabbihī wa l-mu'minūn… (al-Baqara 2:285–286).

Translation

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers… (Whoever recites these two verses at night, they will suffice him.) [Quran 2:285–286; Bukhari 4008, Muslim 807]

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ … قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ … قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ …

Transliteration

Recite Surahs al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, an-Nas; blow into the cupped hands, then wipe the head, face, and as much of the body as possible. Repeat three times.

Translation

When the Prophet ﷺ went to bed each night, he would cup his hands together, blow into them, and recite into them: Surat al-Ikhlas, Surat al-Falaq, and Surat an-Nas. Then he would wipe over whatever he could of his body, beginning with his head and face and the front of his body. He would do this three times.

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا.

Transliteration

Bi-smika llāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā.

Translation

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ.

Transliteration

Allāhumma qinī ʿadhābaka yawma tabʿathu ʿibādak.

Translation

O Allah, save me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ (٣٣)، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (٣٣)، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ (٣٤).

Transliteration

Subḥāna llāh (33×), al-ḥamdu lillāh (33×), Allāhu akbar (34×).

Translation

Recite "Subhan Allah" 33 times, "Alhamdulillah" 33 times, and "Allahu Akbar" 34 times. The Prophet ﷺ taught his daughter Fatima this is better for her than a servant.

اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ.

Transliteration

Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa alja'tu ẓahrī ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk. Lā malja'a wa lā manjā minka illā ilayk. Āmantu bi-kitābika lladhī anzalt, wa bi-nabiyyika lladhī arsalt.

Translation

O Allah, I submit my soul to You, I entrust my affairs to You, I turn my face to You, and I take refuge with You — out of hope in You and fear of You. There is no refuge nor escape from You except in You. I believe in the Book You have revealed and the Prophet You have sent. (Whoever says this and dies that night dies upon the Fitra.)
